Perhaps other areas of the country are suffering as much, but I only know from personal experience in this town.

First order of business, define a professional musician: To me, a pro is one who plays music for money to pay the rent and buy food. Whether they've been doing it for a year or 50, and whether they are good or not, it doesn't matter. If the money they earn funds their basic living expenses, they're a pro in my book. If they live well, they're probably very talented. If they've been doing this for 20 years and still live in their parent's basement eating ramen noodles off a hot plate, then perhaps a face to face with Simon Cowell will give them the swift kick in the arse they need to hang it up and pursue a life otherwise.

I was reminded by a 45yr veteran of the Bham scene that in 1978, cover charge was $5. In 2012, it seems nothing has changed. In fact, some bars don't charge cover at all. That's not necessarily an issue if the bar has only a solo acoustic artist to pay ($150-$250), as that's a fairly cheap nut to cover. But what if the band has 4 or more members? What is the venue saying about the quality or worth of the act? "They're not worth paying to see, but come on in and spend money at the bar." What's the chance that act was paid more than $400 for their show? Not likely.

Thanks to the magic of the internet, I discovered a value measuring calculator which helps determine value on a "now vs then" comparison. It only covers 1774 to 2010 (census data) but that's ok, the point is still relevant. Taking the $5 cover from 1978 as an example, in today's dollars, that would be roughly $16. Now, let's go backwards, but let me set the stage. There seems to be an "understanding" that a musician, any musician, in this town is worth $100/person. That's typical for band arrangements. Solo acts don't really fit into this category, because I've seen people earn $50-$300 for a solo act. Then there's the scale crushers who work for beer. But let's not concern ourselves with them. Ok, so back to $100/person. In 1978 terms, that musician would have only been worth about $30. That is a rough round-up using all the indicators, ranging from unskilled wage to commodity. Musicians see ourselves as skilled wage earners, artists, and/or craftsmen. Vendors see us as a commodity. However, according to my sources, musicians in 1978 were earning $75-$100/person, but if they worked hard and built a following, they could easily get $300-$400/person. Let's take that into 2012 terms, shall we? In today's money, that $100/person should be $315/person. On the upper end of the 1978 range, a $400/person would be $1300/person. I'm going to sidebar this for a minute while you are letting that sink in. Think $1300/person is unrealistic today? Consider the source for my info has a band that fetches in the $4500/gig range for 4 people today. It took over a dozen and a half years to get that band to that point, but that guy who was earning $75-$400 in 1978 is earning almost $1200/person for his band today. So now, is that so unrealistic? Ain't it spooky how we have an actual case study right here in Birmingham who has managed to bear out the realities of a musicians value over time? I'm not making this stuff up...just using that calculator, his figures from 1978, and the figures of what his band does today.

Beer is the primary commodity of a bar, right? 1978 cover was $5. How much was a beer? Typically $1-$2 depending on the town you were in. That hasn't changed much, although in 2012, the beer choices are exponentially greater, with high gravity being an option even for the likes of Budweiser. So a craftsman beer is going to run you $4-12 at a minimum. I've seen them as high as $20 in Decatur GA. But back to the basics, if a Coors was $1 in 1978, it's 3x that in 2012. Think about that for a minute. Beer is 3x, but cover is 1x. Then of course you have all the "social" drinks like "_____ bombs" and Tuaca shots, martinis made from darn near everything but the juice from the bar rag. And all of those come at a hefty price.

How does this relate to musicians? Well, there's a lot hiding under the surface. We complain for lack of proper compensation, yet we all know someone willing to play for gas money. I consider anything less than $100/person gas money. Those who say "gee, you're willing to PAY me to play here?" should be shot on sight, right between the pickups. Believe it or not, there's an awful lot of animosity among musicians in every town with angst for these folks. As another pro musician pointed out to me the other day, those people are in this for a hobby. In 5yrs, they'll drop their Squire guitar combos and pick up a golf bag or a fishing rod. But in the meantime, they managed to screw up the true value of a musician along the way, and like a tornado, they leave a scar that won't heal anytime soon, nor will they have anything to do with the healing process. I can relate to this from my professional photographer background. Along comes a soccer mom who thinks she can buy a camera from an electronics warehouse, set the dial to auto, open up her Fauxtographer Facebook Fauxto page, and start taking pics for $50/session. Puke f'ing puke. A pro wedding photographer fetches $5000-$10000 per wedding. Aunt Sally is going to shoot it for $400. Deal! Bit*h. Thanks for ruining the marketplace. When her fauxtography business doesn't work out, she goes back to painting rocks for craft shows, leaving us pros in the ruins. How do you pick up a turd from the clean end?

Now let's work on solutions. How do we increase the bottom line in our back pocket? I have a couple ideas in mind (and open to more), and it may be a combination of both to achieve success:

Convince the bars to increase cover to $10 across the board. Doesn't matter who the band is on any given night, doesn't matter where the venue is in the metro area. If they charge a cover, bump it to $10 and keep it there. Of course people are going to whine. And they may stop going out for a couple weekends until it sinks in that this is the new reality. Did you stop driving your car because gas is now approaching $3.80/gal, but you were paying less than $3/gal two years ago? If the venues stick to their guns, people are going to pay, because they have no other choice, except to stay home, and we know that's not going to happen. The bar will be forced to bring value to their patrons, which means choosing bands who know how to entertain and keep a crowd (more for another blog). The garage band industry-wrecking hobbyists are eliminated from the circuit almost immediately.

Sidebar: have you been watching Full Throttle Saloon? Michael, the owner of a

gigantic biker bar in Sturgis SD started charging cover to enter the bar, something

he has never done before 2011. This upsets a lot of fans, but not the majority.

This puts Jesse James Dupree (Jackyl) into an outright furious rage. But when

the dust settles, over a 7 day period, the new cover charge is what ultimately

saved the bar from being a failure. It means the 7 day crowd eventually

"got over it" and accepted this as the new norm. 7 days. I propose a $10
cover would revolutionize this town in 2 months. They did it in seven. Sometimes
I think this town is no bigger than the 80 acre compound occupied by FTS. 2 months
may be generous!

Convince the musicians to hold to $200/person minimum. Crazy, right? Not really. If you're a good musician, the 4-6hrs you devote to that one gig shouldn't pay you a penny less. What is your time worth? This gets a little skewed if you're an originals musician. You're hoping someone will come see you play, and at best, you're probably going to get your revenue from CD and/or shirt sales. Otherwise, the bar is likely not paying you. It's all in the name of exposure. But a cover band is providing "entertainment" more than they are providing music (I've got an entire blog I can devote to this topic). If the musicians band together and hold out for proper pay or they don't play, the bars will quickly run out of quality musicians, and they'll have to acknowledge the true value of a musician. So a cover band worth its salt should be asking for $200/person minimum. Or perhaps they should ask for nothing at all except what walks through the door. Whoa!!! Wait!!! Did he just say ask for nothing at all? That's a topic for another blog entry...stay tuned, that one is going to be interesting....

Bottom line, if we want to make more money, the bars need to do their part to afford paying us, and of course we have to do our part to earn it. I don't own a venue, and I've never managed one. But I do own a business, I do know my way around the negotiation table, and one thing is for certain: if you don't ask for it, you won't get it. If you are a venue owner, or know one who would be interested in this topic, I'd love to hear their response. I'd also love to hear your response, so hit reply and let 'er rip tater chip!
By Lee Waites

I had a little phone interview with Jessica Breanne of The Electric Hearts yesterday. They're coming to The Nick Monday the 12th. Right now, that's tomorrow. So I said I would introduce them.

I'll start by saying Jessica has one hell of a voice. I've heard her compared to a whole bunch of people. I liken her to Shingai Shoniwa of The Noisettes myself. But as usual, I recommend you just watch the video at the end and make it up for yourself.

The Electric hearts are definitely a type of Blues. I say "a type" because the sound slips in and out of several different genres. But it retains a Blues base that is unmistakable.

Jessica was a pleasure to talk to, even calling me sir the whole time. She exuded a Southern charm and politeness that reflects all the good things about our culture. I'm assuming by the videos and several comments she made, she also knows how to have a "good ole' time." I believe they'll be hitting the town after the show. So any recommendations on where to go, throw out their way. I told them they need to go to Marty's for sure. They are hitting the road back to her home state of Texas the next day, "for a little South by Southwest (SXSW.)"

They've opened for the Alabama Shakes. Jessica says that she was so glad to meet some other performers on the road that seemed to have a real genuine attitude. "Some bands had this attitude about themselves, like how they were really cool. But the Alabama Shakes were really nice people. It was really refreshing to be around them. They were just, like, Southern nice people." said Jessica. "I'm from Texas. So I miss the small town mentality of being nice to everyone."

All the sweet crap aside. When you watch her sing you're not thinking sweet. She belts the hell out of the lyrics. For one Valentine's show, Apocalyptic Love, they had a video of Carrie playing on a screen in the background. And the music for that show was anything but sweet.

The band has been together for two years. They released an album not long ago when they were still known as Jessica Breanne and the Electric Hearts if anyone is in a buying mood.

The band is Jessica Breanne -vocals, Matt Johanson - bass, Sam Stewart - guitar, Mike Odmark - keys/guitar and Stephen Smith - drums.

Welcome to Birmingham guys. Have a great show!

I like to consider Pete Bernhard, of The Devil Makes Three to be a very close friend of mine. We have the kind of relationship where we can really open up to one another. I want to fill you all in on how cool he is, show you the real Pete, the one I feel I know. I don't know how much of our conversations would be appropriate to share with you. I have to be careful. Because even though I feel like he and I are really great friends. I think he might consider me just some guy he met on the phone a few days ago. He can take a while to warm up to people. Pete is just like that.

Pete is the front man for The Devil Makes Three. He does the talking. He will be the one pictured front and center holding a jackalope. Cooper McBean, shown cradling the Earth, and Pete were the first two members of the band to play together. I normally wouldn't consider this an important fact. It might be important if you realize that Lucia was the third member of the band. Think it through. It's numerology. They're trying to tell us something.

Pete took some time from his day off to chat with me and answer some of my notoriously ridiculous questions. I think he only did it because we're so close. In fact, I'm not sure why his publicity people wanted him to talk to me. I know for a fact they read some of my other stuff. Yet they seemed eager to set up the interview.

I asked Pete about the strange power they seem to have over their fans. I assumed it was some sort of voodoo, that they were casting a spell to make the audience gyrate and scream. I personally loved the music. But when you're dealing with an entity as powerful as Lucia, you have to question exactly what is happening sometimes. He claims there is no black magic involved, that it's just the music. But I wonder. Even the numerous videos of fans covering The Devil Makes Three songs have an air of questionable intent. Are they worshiping, in some drunken, drug addled frenzy? Many of the videos contain open use of alcohol and drugs. All contain jubilant, swaying minions, lost in their cultish communion.

Pete said they're just having fun.

The mist of Lucia's spell has woven itself into every aspect of their music. You can't seem to pin them down. Are they bluegrass? One minute you might think so. Then it changes. You feel transported to the likes of ragtime, country, rockabilly, etc... "This can't be right" you say to yourself. "Momma, you warned me. I knew I should have paid more attention in Sunday school." But it's too late. You might as well order a whisky and get to dancing. Put your tennis shoes under the bed it's time to go.

Pete agrees drinking and having fun is part of their show. "We really want our fans to understand it's OK to get into the show, kind of like a Rock audience would. We want to approach the show in a different way. Y'know where a lot of bluegrass or folk shows the people will all sit down. We work really hard to get everybody to stand up."

They'll be playing at Workplay on the 9th of March. Check out the video below.

I swear to the Lord R. God this is how many views this video had when I checked it out. Be afraid! (I'm not making that up. Check it out and do the math.)

I asked Pete how he felt about being compared to Rusty Cuyler. "Who is that?" he asked. Here you go Pete. "How ya like this old man?"

First of all, let me get something straight. Mishka's people contacted me to do an interview with him, to get him some press before his upcoming show at Workplay. So let's get that out of the way. He'll be playing Thursday night, February, 16 at Workplay. (((Click here for our calendar))) I'll post a link to a video at the bottom so you can see him for yourself and decide if his music is your kind of Reggae.

You know how this kind of thing works. His publicist sends me an email with the show date and asks if we could write a little something before the show. I could just put a link to his website and let you go see what they say about him. Or I could write something about how his music sounds. But is that really what we need to know about a musician? How he or she sounds? C'mon! I guess they thought I would softball some questions and regurgitate this notion that he is a great guy who loves the environment and likes to sing pretty. Pttthhhh!

I need to know what makes the man tick. I need to know the things behind his music. Who is the real Mishka? Well, his publicist got a little rude. All I did was send some questions I thought would help get to the real Mishka. here is what his publicist said "It's a bit wacky but hey, it's press and a plug for the show."

Wacky my ass! I'll let you see the questions and you can be the judge of that!

BFP Music: How would you say your sound, the core resonance of your music was affected by your upbringing? In other words, do the elements of the ocean find their way into the music? Does the grit of the sand and the smiles of the people live in your heart and flow out of your mouth, that sort of thing? Do you close your eyes and feel yourself somewhere else through sharing your music? Do you love the life on stage? Do you look forward to returning somewhere?

by M. David Hornbuckle

Last month on a Sunday night, David Thomas (from the legendary art rock/new wave band Pere Ubu) did a solo performance for about 40 dedicated fans in Birmingham. Was it at Bottletree? The Nick? No, it was in the living room of Troy Thompson and Laney DeJonge. It was a fantastically intimate atmosphere in which to see one of the strangest and most interesting performers in rock and roll history. The intimacy intensified the level of comfort and discomfort, depending on how you felt about the performance itself at that moment.

Jim Fahy from the local record label Communicating Vessels heard that Thomas was doing a series of living room concerts and was intrigued. “Basically,” Fahy said, “he would go anywhere for $1000. There were some other stipulations also, like you couldn’t sell traditional tickets and you couldn’t use traditional advertising. It had to be all word-of-mouth and social networking.”

Fahy got together with concert promoter Lee Shook to plan how they could make this event happen. Even before the idea of the concert came up Fahy and Shook had already been talking about their shared interest in Pere Ubu. Ten years ago, Shook even wrote his senior college thesis at Suwannee about the band. “I was never completely happy with that thesis,” Shook said. “Having the opportunity to bring this concert to Birmingham was a way of finishing it.”

Shook personally put up about half of the money needed to bring David Thomas to Birmingham. He secured the rest from the Birmingham Art Music Alliance, which had some funds left over from last year’s Improvisor festival. Though Thomas comes from the world of rock and roll, the board of the Art Music Alliance deemed his work weird enough to justify the expense.

Shook secured Troy and Laney’s house in Highland Park as a venue. Troy and Laney happened to be friends of his, and he knew they had a good space for such an event. Additionally, the house also happens to be the historic home of one of Shook’s ancestors, Paschal Green Shook. This connection deepened Shook’s personal interest in the concert. He said, “To arrange to have one of my musical heroes perform in a home that had belonged to my own family meant a lot to me.”

With everything in order, Fahy and Shook began to spread the word on Facebook. By contract with the artist, only 40 seats were available. Since they weren’t allowed to sell traditional tickets, they collected “donations” of $25 per person via PayPal. Fahy said, “I was terrified we were going to do something wrong, and he’d cancel the show.” However, the show went on and transpired smoothly (aside from an incident in which one attendee mistakenly parked in a neighbor’s yard).

Living room concerts aren’t new, particularly for artists in the avant-garde who have a scarcity of other venues available to them. However, they are becoming more popular with better-known indie rock and alternative rock artists who are interested in the opportunity to travel with low overhead costs and perform for a smaller, more dedicated audience than they might find in clubs. “It’s a buyers’ market for clubs,” Fahy said. “There’s a lot of competition for good nights at clubs, so putting a tour together that’s beneficial for both venue and artist can be a bit challenging.”

For example, Pat DiNizio from the Smithereens did a living room tour in 2006, and he’s offering these shows again to fans. According to his website, these are request-only, solo acoustic show that last nearly three hours. “The audience calls out songs, and I do my best to entertain them,” he said. Indie rock singer David Bazan from the band Pedro the Lion has also been including house shows on his recent tour. Thomas says he developed an interest in these types of shows after a “delightful experience” at a house concert in Copenhagen introduced him to the concept.

Fahy and Shook both said they would be interested in bringing more shows like this to the area, though they have no living room concerts planned in the immediate future. Troy and Laney, who were very gracious to all their guests, also showed an interest in hosting more events of this kind. Troy mentioned that he might host legendary rockers the Woggles in his basement in January, but at press time the show was not confirmed.Lee Waiteshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09556064354341102667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010805977832662673.post-1795510456916958822011-12-21T16:13:00.001-08:002011-12-21T16:13:51.473-08:00RabidstickLee Waiteshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09556064354341102667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010805977832662673.post-27706855117431327502011-12-21T14:35:00.000-08:002011-12-21T14:35:41.155-08:00BFP Music Biz: Press Release from Leeds<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" DefUnhideWhenUsed="true"
